Luna Sea

Well how can I say...
I first heard about this band as a band "as good as X, maybe even better, trashier": I tried a few mp3s and... but this is all mellow?!? And I haven't been able to go over this disapointment yet: it' s a good band, I won't deny it, but I was expecting something heavy, "maybe trashier than X", so... I like their first albums, but after... it becomes so "happy songs / poppy songs / love songs"... It became "ze" rock band after X splitted, but still... not the same style at all, quiiiiiiite softer!
I may post a "more positive" opinion later, I even hope I will, but now I' m still too disapointed to give an "objective ear" to this band.

To sum up I mainly wrote this "point of view" to warn you: Luna Sea is a rock band... but quite mellow, at least on their last albums (once again first albums are really good). There are good songs, maybe even excellent, in first albums, but after these there are lots of "mellow" songs, next to which you can find some real good stuff... if you arepatient enough to wait for them... But well, if nice/good melodies are enough for you, you should try this band, even with songs of the last albums, you probably won't be disapointed!

Addendum:
I tried to "get into" Luna Sea again recently... and I was right! You can divide their career in two times actually: First part (until Style... or maybe Mother, but details aren't so important), where they played really good compositions, inventive, that "make you be in some specific atmosphere" different for every song, and so on..., but! Lord how their sound was bad on these albums / Ryuichi definitely needed some lessons to learn how to sing! Then the second part of their career, with albums with a far better sound... but far less interesting/good songs, "too easy", really far from the quality of their first albums. If you had to buy only one album of Luna Sea, I think you should choose Mother, which is, up to me, the best "compromise" between both periods: good compositions, and correct sound. Or, if you like slightly more "boosted" songs no matter if it sounds a little commercial, Period would be ok, would it be only for you to have Tonight and True Blue on a single album!
More generally, I especially recommand their concert-videos, I learnt to like Luna Sea thanks to these videos after all! They played "heavier" versions of their songs live, when they play old songs you (finally!) hear them with a correct sound, and so on...: perfectum est! I downloaded 2-3 videos on the net, all were really great, I could buy only one for now, Lunatic Tokyo (really excellent!), and I don't doubt that other videos will arrive in my mail-box some day soon!

(+ 1 Best of: Never Sold out, I never listened to it, but I saw the track-list and most popular (and best) songs of Luna Sea seem to be in this Best of, and I everyone I heard about this album told me it was excellent... so it should at least be great!
+ Another "best of" album: Period (23/12/2000): Commercial I admit, but really good. If you had to buy only one album of their "second period", I would say this one would be a good choice! Especially as "older songs" are re-recorded with a better sound: it "speeds" them a bit, and sounds really good!)
